The Bible places a lot of emphasis on honoring those who are above us. God is the only authority, and any of such which exists is ordained by Him (Romans 13:1). The Bible instructs us to honor and obey both spiritual and secular authority placed above us. Hebrews 13:17 says: “Obey your leaders and submit to them, for they are keeping watch over your souls, as those who will have to give an account. Let them do this with joy and not with groaning, for that would be of no advantage to you”.
Leadership is an institution ordained by God, thus, we have been commanded to obey the institution, for God does not take the dishonor of leaders likely. The Bible tells us the story of a group of children killed by bears for mocking the prophet Elijah, due to dishonor. We are to respect our leaders as they represent God’s authority over our lives. Honoring our leaders includes treating them with respect, obeying them and even going out of our way to assist them. In the church, we are to honor anyone God has put over us as our Pastors and leaders. Our growth as a Christians depends on many things, including honoring and submitting to those who have been placed in positions of spiritual authority over us.
Furthermore, in the workplace, we are to serve our leaders and employers as unto God and not to men, giving our best in everything we do (Colossians 3:23). The same also we are to do for our leaders in government. We must treat them with respect, obey their instructions, and constantly include them in our prayers as the Bible instructs us to. When we are obedient to our leaders, God rewards us and we receive the grace to be leaders also, as a good leader must first be an excellent follower. SHALOM!
