LIVING BY THE SPIRIT
To live by the Spirit simply means to be guided by Him. The Christian walk is not an easy one, and we cannot do it by ourselves. This is why we have been given the Holy Spirit: to lead, direct, and dwell in us. One of the promises of Jesus to His disciples and in extension to us, is that he will send them a Comforter—the Holy Spirit—to help them continue in the faith they have received. Jesus speaking to His disciples in John 14:16 says: “And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever”.
To live by the Spirit means to rely on the Holy Spirit to guide you in thought, word, and deed. It simply means you are totally dependent on Him, because it is impossible for us to live the Christian life without the help of the Holy Spirit. Possessing the life of Christ entails receiving the Holy Spirit, as it is Him who gives you the power to live according to the will of God. It is important to understand that the Holy Spirit will not force us to do things according to His will, it is our responsibility to yield to His guidance, knowing that His plans for us are for good and not for evil.
To live by the Spirit, your relationship with Him must be alive. You must cultivate the habit of fellowshipping with Him daily, praying in the Spirit regularly, studying the scriptures and attending fellowships regularly. The Holy Spirit enables us to live a perfect Christian life and abide in love (Galatians 5:22-23). When we are deliberate about living by the Spirit, we bear the fruits of righteousness effortlessly and the lust of the flesh is not be fulfilled in us. SHALOM!
